WHAT MAKES THE AHFAS SPECIAL?

A Little History

Since 1929, the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad has been providing around-the-clock emergency medical and rescue services to the residents of Atlantic Highlands and surrounding towns.

The AHFAS has been nationally and regionally recognized as a top volunteer organization in the field of emergency medical services. We know that when you pick up the phone to dial 9-1-1 you expect us to be there and we take that commitment seriously. We may be volunteers, but we train and operate at the highest standards to assure we deliver the best EMS care.

Indeed, the squad has been named the Outstanding Volunteer EMS Agency of the year by the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services, Office of Emergency Medical Services (2008) and a Gold Award winner by EMS World Magazine (2009) and has been voted one of the best ambulance squads in Monmouth County, NJ by readers of the Asbury Park Press.

We respond to all sorts of emergencies, big and small, on land and on water. Our primary response area is the borough of Atlantic Highlands, though our people, our services and our equipment are often called upon by surrounding towns and throughout the state.

The squad operates solely on the generous donations from the community and the borough. Funds are raised through one annual fund-drive letter, grants, and stand-alone gifts from members of the community.

Housed at the Borough of Atlantic Highlands EMS building at 10 E. Highland Ave., we provide basic life support EMS care, water and ice rescue, and vehicle extrication services. The organization responds to upwards of 500 calls a year of varying severity. We handle everything from minor scrapes to critical injuries.

The AHFAS owns and operates fully-equipped two ambulances, an 18-foot Boston Whaler boat, a 14-foot Zodiac inflatable vessel, and a four-week drive all-terrain Polaris, specially equipped for medical use. The squad partners with Keyport First Aid in operating a NJ EMS Task Force Medical Ambulance Bus, which is capable of providing care to upwards of 20 patients at a time.

There is more to the organization than fancy medical equipment, however. Without good people, people like you, the squad doesn’t exist. Adult Members of the AHFAS are dedicated to responding to calls 365 days a year, 24-hours a day. The squad develops future members through its Cadet group for students between the ages of 14 and 17.

Are you ready to join the award-winning team at the AHFAS? We seek volunteers willing to help others in their time of need. Training is provided for free. The personal satisfaction is endless.
