ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad was named “One of the Best” ambulance squads in Monmouth County by readers of the Asbury Park Press.
The organization was only one of three named in the county by readers of the publication. Shark River Hills was named “The Best” while Atlantic Highlands and Colts Neck First Aid Squad were named “One of the Best.”
“This citation is a testament to the quality of the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad,” said Richard Huff, chief. “More important, it's a validation of the work that the women and men of the organization are doing day in and day out, to help their friends and neighbors in the community.”
For more than 80 years, the AHFAS has been providing free, around-the-clock, emergency medical and rescue services to the people of Atlantic Highlands and occasionally the surrounding communities. The all-volunteer operation responds to emergencies on land, on the water with its specially equipped 18-foot rescue boat, and on ice. The AHFAS does this through donations from the borough and the community.
The squad was named the “Best Ambulance Squad” in Monmouth County in 2009 by readers of the Asbury Park Press. It also earned EMS Magazine's national Gold Award for volunteer organizations in 2009. And in 2008, the squad was named New Jersey’s Outstanding Volunteer EMS Agency of the Year.
“Everyone on this squad gives their free time to train and respond to EMS calls,” Huff said. “None of them do it for awards or accolades. However, each one of these honors is recognition for the hard work devoted to helping others.”
